What Good Coaches Actually Do Image

Hey Racers welcome to the Blayze racing newsletter where every week you will get an answer to a racing question you ponder about after every session, a video will make your jaw drop, and one article that will change your racing life in one simple email.

So, let's wave this green flag and get right into it. Oh and if you aren't a subscriber yet but need this in your life just enter your details below!

1.  What Does A Good Coach Really Do?

The answer to this question may seem obvious, "You help drivers go faster!".  While that's absolutely correct, I want to explain how we actually do that.

Anytime I'm out at a track talking speaking with drivers our conversation invariably ends up on the topic of lap times and going faster.  One of the most common phrases I hear drivers say is, "I know exactly where I'm losing time, I just need to suck it up and go faster."

When driver's explain where they think they're losing time I almost always hear one of the following areas mentioned:

  • I need to brake deeper
  • I need to roll in more entry speed but I just don't have the confidence
  • I have to figure out my setup, I can't trust my car in high-speed corners
  • I have to work on trail braking deeper into the corner
  • I need to pick up the throttle earlier!

Let's pretend they are spot on with the reasons they are losing time (in my experience 80%+ of the time when self-analyzing we focus on the wrong things).  If they know exactly where they're losing lap time, why are they not going faster?

What is the difference between the driver actually making progress and the driver that has plateaued?

Do they have different goals?  Doubt it, they probably set the exact same goals.

Is one driver working harder?  Maybe a little bit, but I see plenty of evidence that more effort does not directly mean improved results in our sport.  Everyone in this sport has a pretty strong baseline of effort already!

Where does the biggest difference lie?  The driver making the progress has systems built into their driving which creates proper feedback loops.   It's the feedback loops and systems that help drivers make the change and find lap time gains.

My job as a coach isn't to tell you what you're doing wrong.  That doesn't mean I don't do that, but any half-decent coach can identify areas of issues... my real job (and the real secret behind what Blayze coaches do) is we give drivers specific systems to drive improvements.

We go beyond the "what" and give the "how".  We give drivers a process for improvement.  Those processes are mirrored after how the best in the world dealt with the same issues.

For example, what is the best process for pre-race weekend studying?  The drivers I work with have a simple but very effective system for race weekend prep that helps them show up ready to go from the very first session.  It's focused on the right things and limits the noise to simplify getting ready.

Every driver I know wants to increase their entry speed, but HOW do you actually go about doing that?  I give my drivers a system that includes what we need to work on, in what order we need to work on things, and how we're going to make the change.  It's that system that consistently drives progress.

A coach should take the time to understand your goals, study your driving to find strengths and weaknesses, and then deliver a process to drive improvements.  If you're struggling with not seeing the progress you want, it's almost definitely down to the systems and feedback loops you have in place.

2. The Oversteer Masterclass

This week I wrote an in-depth guide about oversteer.  In this guide we cover:

  • The different types of oversteer.
  • How to adapt your driving to oversteer depending on when in the corner you get it.
  • Potential setup changes to make depending on what type of oversteer you have and in what part of the corner you're getting it.
