A Creative Exercise to Work on Your Guitar Scales

Blayze Research

Guitar

Hey folks, Scott Goldbaum here, one of your Fender Play instructors. I was thinking about those guitarists who really dread working on their scales. So, I wanted to come up with an exercise that integrates some finger-picking to make it more creative and fun.

The Breakdown

To begin, get your hands placed for the G major scale.

  • Your G note on the 3rd fret of the low E string.
  • Your A note on the 5th fret of the E string.
  • You've got your B on the 2nd fret.
  • C on the 3rd fret.
  • D on the 5th fret of your A string.
  • Followed by E on the 2nd fret of your D string.
  • F sharp on the 4th fret of your D string.
  • Then the octave G on the fifth fret.

We're just going to use our thumb to pick each one of those.

When we're done with our thumb, we're going to pedal the open G and B string using our pointer and our middle finger. And that's a really fun way of working on your scales.
