Question of the Week: How Do You Stay Mentally Ready While on the Bench? Image

It can be hard not being a starter in a soccer game. ⚽Unfortunately, there is a limit to the number of players allowed on the field at one time. So usually, every athlete will have to be a non-starter at some point in their athletic career.

However, you need to stay ready while sitting on the bench. 🪑There may be an allotted time that you know you will be subbed in, but an injury can occur where you are needed sooner.

Blayze coach Zoe Morse brings you some tips on how you can stay mentally ready while on the bench.

Focus on the Game🎯
The most important thing you need to be doing while on the bench is watching the game. Don’t just watch the players, really pay attention to how your team is playing and how the opponent is playing. Is your team playing slower than the other team? Is your team not pressing high enough? Maybe you noticed the opponent leaves big holes in the midfield.

All of this is information you can use when you substitute into the game. You can give feedback to your teammates as you go out to help them better control the field.

Watch Players👀
Identify the player or players that are in the position you will likely sub in for. Notice what they are doing well and what you think you can improve upon when you enter the game. Try and guess what the player or players will do next. Visualize yourself making the decisions on the field.

Support Your Teammates🧑‍🤝‍🧑
While you wait for your turn in the game, support your teammates in any way possible. Cheer them on. Bringing positive energy to the bench can help your team members on the field and the others on the bench. It helps to keep the entire team’s energy high.

Whether you get fifteen minutes⌛ for each half or fifteen minutes total, stay ready so you can make the most of your time on the field.  Staying engaged on the bench, knowing your role and what you plan to do when you get on the field will help you jump straight into the game.⚽

You never know exactly when your time will come but when it does you have to go immediately. While you wait, be the best teammate possible from the bench.
